How To Fix Ableton Slow Loading when launched

Update: I’ve recently found out that windows updates can reset a PC’s performance settings so have a quick check if you’ve recently updated.

Update two: If you can move you’re audio samples library onto another hard drive seperate from the Ableton install folder this will have a small impact to speed up.

Tip: You can drag and drop from pretty much anything into ableton

How To Fix Ableton Slow Loading when launched

Is Ableton Live slow at loading when first launched? Is Ableton re-scanning VST when it’s loading?

There is a secret trick to disable the rescan of VST on launch that you won’t find in the instruction manual. But before I tell you there are a few things that you can do before you get to this stage. Make sure you always use custom install when installing VST’s and install them into a folder where you want them. Not in C:/Program files/
By locating all your VST in one folder you will gain you more control over your plug-ins. You can also select this folder as your “custom folder” in the Ableton options menu. This way when Ableton rescans your folder it will only scan your custom folder and not your entire storage drive.

if you want to stop Ableton re-scanning VSTs every launch all you need is a simple text document with , saved into the main folder of abletons program files as ‘Optins.txt’

Options.txt file

  • Live Versions: All
  • Operating System: All
The “Options.txt” file allows the possibility to enable certain experimental features in Live. These options are mainly used for developing and internal testing but may be useful for you as well.
Note: Options.txt functions are unsupported features. They may change or be removed in future updates without warning.

How to create an Options.txt file

  1. Create a new plain text file using a text editor (Notepad, TextEdit etc)
  2. Name it “Options.txt”.
  3. Place it in the hidden Live Preferences folder at this location (x.x.x corresponds to the version of Live you are currently using, eg 10.0.1):
\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live x.x.x\Preferences\
/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live x.x.x/

Tip: the app data folder is hidden so make sure to tick show ‘Hidden items’

-EnableMapToSiblings=1                Enables Map to All Siblings Option in right click menu

-_PluginAutoPopulateThreshold=128   (max 128)     Automatically maps available functions in VST on open

-ThinningAggressiveness=0.0          (0.0 – 1)    Lower Number = more breakpoints created in automation

-AutoAdjustMacroMappingRange            Prevents mappings from being reset to the lowest setting

-NoVstStartupScan                Disables VST SCAN *only* on startup of Ableton

-_EnsureKeyMessagesForPlugins             Ensures that key messages are sent to VSTs

-ReWireMasterOff                Disables Ableton from being the Rewire Master

-ReWireChannels=8              (max 64)    Sets number of Rewire Channels

-DontCombineAPCs                Makes each APC independent when using multiple APC’s

-AbsoluteMouseMode                Prevents Alternative Inputs from resetting mouse position

-StrictDelayCompensation            Force delay-compensate of all tracks regardless of monitoring state

-_RelaxFileManagerSearch            Bypass the checksum comparison of Missing Candidate Replacement

-EnableArmOnSelection                Auto Arms the track when selected

-NoAutoArming                    Disables Auto Arming on new tracks

IMPORTANT – Don’t forget to only keep either -NoAutoArming or -EnableArmOnSelection as they conflict with each other

All the information in this post is thanks mainly to the info learnt from Madeleine, an ex-employee of Ableton and a certified Ableton trainer over at SonicBloom.
There is so much knowledge over at SonicBloom people! It’s an Ableton user must!
